The original idea for a 21-day challenge came to me while I was completing my Brain Fitness Coach certification through the International Sports Sciences Association.
Most people know about neuroplasticity — how the brain can be intentionally reshaped. But fewer have heard about neurogenesis and its partner synaptogenesis — the formation of new neurons (and synapses) in the brain.
While neuroplasticity can reshape a brain in as little as 90 days (though some studies say it’s closer to 7-9 months),1 neurogenesis can rebuild the brain in a fraction of that time (3-4 weeks).2 3
When we pair physical movements with cognitive exercises, like journaling, we stimulate an environment not only ripe for change but also for growth. This allows us to change our thinking patterns and improve our mental capabilities (e.g., memory, focus, attention, problem-solving, etc.) at a dramatically accelerated rate.
